Hello Doctor, my son has a habit to have meal with the instant noodle soup package, anytime he eats he opens one noodle pack but only takes the soup. I feel that is a waste so I keep all of them to eat later on. Doctor please tell me how long can noodle packs edible after being opened? Should we continue to use after keeping them for long? I preserve it carefully. I tie knot of the noodle pack opening by rubber band then put in sealed paper box. Can we eat again without any problem if preserve like that? Thank you for answering.

Dear Le Chi!

Despite tasty, eating rice with instant noodle soup package is not the best way. Kids like to eat instant noodle soup package because they are lack of salty food. On one hand, parents should review their way of seasoning the food. On the other hand, parents can use instant noodle soup package to marinate meat and fish, instead of only use seasoning powder.

Instant noodles should be used within the day after being opened, or preserved for long in the fridge, instead of the unsafe method like putting in sealed paper box as it cannot prevent the mold due to moisture in the room or in the paper box.

If there is no fridge available, how long should we preserve the opened instant noodle pack in outside environment? I usually eat one and a half noodle pack, how long can I keep the other half pack? Thanks Doctor.

Hello Dinh,

If you don’t have fridge, you can preserve the unused noodle in original pack in cool places for several days. The best and safest way is to use up any opened pack. Why only one and a half pack? Why not call a friend and “finish” it all?

Hello Doctor, at home my mom is used to soaking instant noodles before stir-frying them. My mom said doing like that could make the noodle fiber tasty and infuse spices faster when stir-frying. Sometimes when she couldn’t use all the soaked noodle, she dried them for storage. Please tell me:

What are the effects of soaking in such way on the nutrients?

What are the effects of re-drying noodle in such way?

Hello,

For quicker noodle stir-frying, it is correct to let the noodle infuse spices more easily. It is cleverer to quickly boil the noodle in boiling water, pick out to cool or even flush cold water to prevent the noodle fibers from sticking to each other, then you can make stir-fried noodle tastier.

After soaking, if not used up, the best way to preserve is using the fridge (if any), drying for later use is unsafe as the noodle is prone to bacterial infection and mold.
